Bosses plan to rebuild the famous cobbles at another location so the ITV show will look its best on high definition TV.
The set will move from the current Granada Studios in Manchester to Salford Quays, starting from 2012.
'HD is with us so we're going to build it to ensure it stands the test of time,' a Corrie spokesman tells the BBC.
'All of the old favourites will be there - The Kabin and The Rovers Return - but it gives us options going forward for expanding. That's the beauty of being on a purpose-built site.
'We're on a 7.7-acre site, so
in terms of what happens in the future who knows, but it gives us options from a production perspective that we don't currently have.'
The current Coronation Street set has been in use since 1982.
